Our Story
Built on a Dream,
Fuelled by Passion
LA Cafe was born on 13th May 2021, in the heart of the pandemic. No investors, no marketing budget, no guarantees — just Chef Ankur Baria, his life savings, and a small cafe on Sutton High Street opposite the train station. His philosophy, then and now: perfect the basics, do simple things the best.
The first two years were brutal. “I did not earn a single penny,” Ankur recalls. “2021 was the toughest year — we weren't on the surface, we were beneath it.” But he never wavered: “Even if I have to shut down, I will go down fighting.”
Coffee became brunch. Brunch became a destination. The destination became a restaurant. Four consecutive Good Food Awards, two Gold Seals, a UK Top 50 Cafe award, five-star ratings on every platform, and a menu of daily specials never repeated in over four years. Today LA Cafe enters its next chapter — a modern neighbourhood bistro, serving exceptional brunch by day and refined dining by night.
Dinner is now served.
Four years in. Award-winning. The room is refurbished — and full bistro service is now open, Thursday to Saturday evenings.

Meet the Chef
Ankur Baria
Founder, Owner & Executive Chef
Trained at the Institute of Hotel Management in India — one of the country's most prestigious hospitality schools — Ankur joined the Taj group young, holding a senior role by 24. Across more than 27 years he has worked through luxury hotels, restaurants and multi-site operations in the UK and abroad, learning every side of the business — from the science of cooking to the running of a kitchen.
That discipline shapes every plate at LA Cafe. Ankur is in at 5.30am to cook himself, greet every guest, and craft a daily special that has never been repeated — not once in four years. His philosophy is simple: serve great food, look after people, and never stop improving.
